Cloud or On-Premise Deployment, what is the difference between the two? Thinking of investing in Visitor Management System but still torn between cloud and on-premise? Here is a simple guide for you.
Hosting your data on the cloud seems promising as your applications, data, runtime, middleware, o/s, virtualization, servers, storage, and networking will be managed for you. But, not all organizations are fit for cloud deployment as there are things that must be put into consideration.
Security Measures
If you wanted your IT team to focus on the business-critical process instead of looking for the risk that comes with having your data stored within your premise, you may choose to deploy in the cloud. However, if you are not confident with storing your data in the cloud and you wanted to have visibility of your system as you are anxious to comply with different data privacy acts, you may deploy it on-premise.
Organization’s Nature of Work
If your employees or hosts are always on the go, deploy your system on the cloud so they can have access to the system wherever they go. But, if they are just in the vicinity, on-premise deployment would suffice.
Payment Preference and Expansion Plan
Cloud deployment is preferred by some enterprises because it is cheaper as it comes subscription-based. However, this is not preferred by some government agencies because it is quite a hassle for them as they will need to undergo a bidding every renewal. On-premise is expensive but it comes in perpetual which means you only need to pay once. The payment that would follow is only for maintenance or support.
If ever your company has a plan for expansion, go with the cloud because you won’t need to purchase and install upgrades, cloud service will handle this for you. There will be some changes in the system requirements that should be met to suit your situation when you deploy your environment on-premise.
Cloud vs. On-Premise Deployment: Disaster Recovery Plan and Resources
A business continuity plan protects your data and systems whether you are struck by a natural disaster, power failure or other crisis. With data being stored in the cloud, you are ensured that your data are backed up and secured in a safe location. How your organization can tolerate downtime shall also be considered to avoid loss of productivity.
However, if your organization does not have one, you will be susceptible to downtime and productivity loss. This is important in assessing if an organization will choose cloud or on-premise deployment.
Cloud vs. On-Premise Deployment: Strength of Network Connection
When data is hosted in the cloud, an internet connection will be required to access the data. This will be a problem when you have an intermittent connection or when the network connection is suddenly down. The good thing about on-premise is that it will not require an internet connection for you to access your data.
With the following considerations stated above, designing and planning for your infrastructure would be trouble-free.
