The Main Components in a Parcel Scanning System

Some people refer to a parcel scanning system as a DWS. DWS stands for Dimensioning, Weighing, and Scanning System. These also refer to the main functions of the parcel scanning system. Companies that process parcels need a DWS system in daily operations. It’s important to know the components that make up the right DWS system.

Dimensioner

The dimensioner measures the parcel. There are many types of dimensioners. It can be static and dynamic, depending on the parcel being scanned. Consider factors like object shape, conveyor speed, and spacing. Additionally, the device captures measurement points. It uses light in the process of measuring the object. The dimensioner uses beams, shadows, or reflective technology.

Scale

The scale registers the weight of the parcel. Sometimes, items on a conveyor are moving at different speeds. The scale needs to pick up the parcel’s weight quickly and accurately.  However, the parcel needs to be stable during the weighing process. The more the speed increases, the less accurate the weight of the product is.

Barcode Readers

The parcel scanning system uses a variety of barcode scanners. Others use a laser-based barcode. The more complex types are image-based barcodes and 2D barcodes. Data management software recognises validated barcodes. Invalidated items end up in the reject pile. These are usually the items with damaged barcodes. They then go through reprocessing before delivery.

Data Management Software

The data management software merges all the data from the DWS system. Furthermore, this software contains features that aid in sorting efficiency. Aside from basic functions, the software detects parcels that are side by side. This prevents errors or incorrect data profiles from occurring. It uses sorting commands to ensure the items go to the right zone.

Conveyor

A conveyor moves the parcel from one location to another.  It is a standard piece of equipment for a warehouse. However, there are also many types of conveyors. They also require maintenance to work properly. Consider the following in choosing the right conveyor:

  • load of the items
  • speed of the conveyor
  • how long it takes to sort items
  • the pickup points
  • width and length

Accessories

A parcel scanning system has other additional accessories. Most warehouses incorporate cameras, sensors, data displays, and label printers. These items add accuracy and efficiency to the process.

How to Choose the Right Equipment for Parcel Scanning Systems

Two things should be considered when choosing the right equipment for the DWS system. First, know the typical uses of the parcel scanning system. Find out what information it can provide for you. Second, find out all the details related to the product or object.

Typical Uses and Information Provided by Parcel Scanning System

A parcel scanning system is essential for warehouse operations. It automates the measuring processes. The following are the typical uses of a parcel scanning system:

  • verification of customer-declared weight and size data
  • compliance with weights and measures regulations
  • assist in asset management

Aside from this, the system also provides important information. Listed below are the data it provides:

  • Billable weight
  • Dimensional weight
  • Measurement of the parcel
  • Weight for invoicing and load planning
  • Image of the items measured to serve as proof
  • Shape data to determine if it is too large or unstackable

Objects to be Handled by the Parcel Scanning System

Different factors affect the way the system scans the parcel. Usually, a DWS system identifies, weighs, and measures any item. However, it is important to note the types of objects being handled.

Singulated flow vs Mass flow

Singulated parcel flow means the objects are not sided by side. Before the scanning takes place, they require a certain distance from each other. On the other hand, mass parcel flow does not need items to be evenly spaced. However, note that in mass flow, the DWS system does not capture weight data.

Conveyables vs Non-Conveyables vs Palletised

A conveyable parcel is easily handled by a single person. This type of parcel is solid in shape and rides smoothly on a conveyor. There are also non-conveyable items. These types of parcels are heavy and hard for one person to handle. Examples of this are heavy boxes, chests, and scooters. Finally, we have palletized goods. Palletized goods are placed on a pallet or skid. Because of this object’s size, shape or weight, it is impossible for one person to handle.

Regular Dimensioning vs Irregular Dimensioning

Shapes affect the way a dimensioner scans the parcel. In choosing a dimensioner, make sure it is right for the object. There are dimensioners that scan all approved shapes. On the other hand, there are some that only scan specific shapes- such as cubes. This is helpful if you’re only scanning boxed items.

A DWS system might sound simple. You might think it only has three primary functions. In fact, there are a lot of other aspects to choosing the right DWS system. There’s still more to learn about warehouse automation. For assistance or questions, contact Qbasis today!
